Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea separating the Aegean from the Libyan Sea. It consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethimno, Heraklion and Lasithi.
Crete is a quite distinct place full of vitality, warmth, hospitality and culture. Crete is well known for its seas and beaches but it has a very contrasting landscape. Crete is also the home of the Minoan civilization which flourished from approximately the 27th century BC to the 15th century BC. Some of the major Minoan archaeological sites are Knossos , Phaistos , Malia , Kato Zakros and Galatas.
It is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Travelling with your car, you will meet there two climate zones: the Mediterranean and the North African. It has many beautiful beaches, which are combined to a mountainous scene. You will also be able to meet many beautiful gorges (if you like hiking, don't forget to visit Samaria gorge).
